Firmware

Retro-Go

A retro-gaming launcher and multi-emulator collection — load your games from a microSD card and play.

Retro-Go turns your Attaky into a handheld retro console. It's a launcher and a collection of emulators in one: drop your game files on a microSD card, pick a title from the menu, and play.

This firmware supports all Retro Series Complete Builds.

What you can do with it

  • Browse and launch your games from a single menu
  • Play across several classic systems
  • Save and resume your progress

What you need

Module
RequiredCore: ESP32 1.0 + Expand: Media I/O 1.0 (microSD + speaker)
RecommendedControl: Gamepad (Bottom) 1.0 (proper game controls)
OptionalPower: Standard Cell 1.0 (battery)

Without a gamepad you can still navigate with the keyboard or buttons, but games play best with the Gamepad module. Already have a Retro Series build? It's ready to flash — Retro-Go runs on all of them.

Install it

Firmware is installed from the Attaky Firmware Store with a one-click web flasher — no toolchain to set up.

Open the Attaky Firmware Store in a supported browser (Chrome or Edge) and connect your Attaky over USB-C.

Pick Retro-Go and click flash. Keep the device connected until it finishes.

The device reboots into the Retro-Go launcher. Add your games (below) and start playing.

Don't unplug while flashing. Make sure you pick the firmware that matches your hardware — Retro-Go needs the Media I/O module for its microSD and speaker.

Flash manually (advanced)

Retro-Go ships as a single combined image, flashable from 0x0 in one step:

FileRoleFlash address
firmware.imgCombined device image0x0
esptool.py --chip esp32s3 write_flash 0x0 firmware.img

First steps

Add your own game files to the microSD card, organized by system, then insert the card and pick a title from the launcher. Your games stay on the card — Retro-Go reads them at runtime.

Versions

Retro-Go follows a rolling upstream release rather than numbered versions; the Attaky build tracks the current upstream.

Upstream & license

Retro-Go is an open-source project that Attaky ports to its modular hardware and makes available to flash.

  • Upstream: ducalex/retro-go, build 6d74b
  • License: GPL-2.0 (the project as a whole; individual emulator cores may carry their own licenses — see upstream)
  • Attaky source: Attaky-Module/retro-go — an overlay (Attaky's board target and patches) over upstream Retro-Go, which is pulled from upstream as a submodule rather than re-hosted

Known limitations

Emulator performance and compatibility follow upstream — Attaky doesn't make per-system promises, and the gamepad mapping is an Attaky adaptation that may differ from upstream defaults. Run into something that doesn't work? See Troubleshooting & FAQ.
