Retro Series
Retro gaming — a color screen, a full gamepad, and a microSD library, in a couple of different shapes.
The Retro Series is built for retro gaming. Every build pairs a color screen with a full gamepad and microSD storage, so you can load classic games onto a card and play them with real buttons — no online account, no tether. The builds differ in shape: one to hold, one for the desk.
The recipe
Every Retro build is the same combination of modules:
- Core: ESP32 1.0 — the host, with the color screen and Wi-Fi / Bluetooth
- Expand: Media I/O 1.0 — microSD storage for your games, plus a speaker for sound
- Control: Gamepad (Bottom) 1.0 — a full gamepad: D-pad, A / B / X / Y, and shoulder buttons
- Power: Standard Cell 1.0 — the rechargeable battery
What changes from one build to the next is the form factor — handheld or tabletop. Pick the shape that fits how you'll play.
Firmware
The Retro Series is built for retro gaming as a capability — the firmware is flashed separately, not fixed at purchase. Retro-Go is one retro-gaming firmware you can run, and it supports every Retro Series build. See Firmware for the options and how to flash.
The builds
Retro Pocket 1.0
The handheld — a flat console with the screen and gamepad in your hands.
Retro Arcade 1.0
The tabletop — the screen angles up on a base, like a little arcade cabinet.
Planned
- Retro Flip 1.0 — a flip form with a built-in gamepad. Planned — not yet available.
Compare the builds
Both launched builds share the same Core, Media I/O, gamepad, and battery — they differ in shape and size.
| Build | Form | Dimensions (mm) | Weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retro Pocket 1.0 | 68 × 97 × 20.5 | 130.5 g | Handheld play, games in your pocket | |
| Retro Arcade 1.0 | Arcade | 68 × 58.5 × 72.4 | 132.8 g | A tabletop arcade for the desk |
